From prenatal care and Pap smear testing to family planning and gynecology, there are many reasons to visit an OB/GYN at one point or another. That’s why you need to find a specialist who is not just an expert in the field, but whom you can trust and feel comfortable being around.
Santa Monica has no shortage of OB/GYN’s; so much so that you can easily spot one across the street; and a single search online will reveal hundreds of options to choose from. But the problem is, not all these facilities are created equal – they vary based on the kinds of services they offer, as well as their experience, location, customer care, price, tools, resources and more. For this reason, you’ll need to take time to compare the available options to find out which one is right for you.
We asked Caroline Colin MD, a top rated OB/GYN in Santa Monica about what one should look for in an OB/GYN specialist. According to her sentiments, here is what you should look for:
As with any other health care service, you want to work with an OB/GYN who has incredible experience in the field. They should be knowledgeable about the kind of problem that you are presenting. Ideally, your OB/GYN should have a track record of dealing with patients with similar issues as yours, for a long time. And although this is optional, it would be great if your doctor is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as it indicates that they have passed a series of thorough oral and written exams.
The reputation of an OB/GYN is critical to his or her survival. The confidence and trust of their patients can have a direct and profound effect on the facility’s bottom line. If the OB/GYN has a reputation of delivering quality services and has won the hearts of many, then it’s likely that they are doing something right.
Male or female
Remember, visiting an OB/GYN might mean removing your clothes. It’s therefore essential to work with a specialist whom you feel very comfortable with. If you are one of those women who prefer to be checked by a woman, then a good idea would be to find a woman specialist. In the same breath, you want to make sure that she does not have male partners who cover other solutions for her. However, you should note that a male OB/GYN made a conscious decision to care for women and will always do so with respect.
This includes everything from reception all the way to when you leave the facility – are you well received and tended to? Is the doctor punctual? And how are you treated – is it like any other number, or as a cherished patient? How about communication? Do you find it hard to connect to the facility? And what’s the doctor’s availability? All these will help point you to whether they are the right fit for you or not.
